Sundays at Nsansa Village

Writer's picture: Laura HietalaLaura Hietala

On Sundays at Nsansa Village, the front gate is unlocked, and all street children are invited in.

These children walk (some barefoot) roughly 3 hours from downtown Lusaka for the church service, a light lunch, the opportunity to wash their clothes, and a time of fellowship. As you can see in the photos, for some, this is one of the few opportunities to sleep restfully, knowing they are safe from harm.

I chatted with a small group of girls who made the journey, and they are always present in my mind. From the condition of their clothes, skin, and hair, I am sure it had been several weeks since they were able to clean themselves. Several of the girls were outgoing, easy to smile, and excited to chat with me. But one of the older girls (14-yo), who still brings me to tears, struggled to smile at all. She was reserved and I could see the pain behind her eyes.

Even now, my heart still breaks for her since I can only imagine the horrors and trauma that she's been subjected to in her life on the streets.

My prayer is to hopefully see her again because I want to pour hope into her. Lord-willing! Please pray for these sweet children.
